The first thing you want to look at whenever you compare two car models is what's new about them, as each new model year brings excitement to the table.

In terms of the Outback, it's definitely justified. This year, the Outback hits showrooms with a refreshed look that gives it sportier and more aggressive lines, and a range of features have been added. These include daytime LED running lights, noise-dampening side mirrors, and a brand-new infotainment system with Android and Apple smartphone integration, as well as a new central console and a new steering wheel design.

If you're waiting to hear what's new about the Ford Edge, the answer is…nothing. Ford didn't offer any new updates or upgrades to the Edge this year.

Fuel Economy

At one point, it was assumed that SUVs were going to deliver poor fuel economy ratings, but that's no longer the case.

Subaru wins out in this area. Its engine gives you an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 25 city/32 highway MPG.* By contrast, the Ford Edge can only deliver an EPA-estimated 20 city/30 highway MPG.

Not only does the Outback offer better efficiency, it has a bigger gas tank, too-18.5 gallons to the Edge's 18 gallons. This means you'll be stopping at the gas station a lot less frequently with the Outback than with the Edge.

The ability to tow a trailer is something that's becoming important at all vehicle sectors these days. Once more, the Outback outperforms the Edge. Its maximum towing capacity, when properly equipped, is 2,700 pounds. Whether you're dragging a trailer to camp or a friend's small sedan out of the mud, this is a solid rating. The Ford Edge can't match up to it, offering a maximum towing capacity of only 1,500 pounds.

Furthermore, the Outback comes standard with all-wheel drive (AWD) and a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The Ford Edge, meanwhile, comes standard with front-wheel drive.
